LCV2017: UK team behind new high performance electric Ariel supercar

A collaboration between two UK-based world-leaders in electric motor design and engineering has led to the development of the new high performance electric motor for the Ariel Hipercar – which makes its first appearance at Cenex-LCV Expo 2017 – the UK’s premier low carbon vehicle event.

Motor Design Limited (MDL) is a world leader in the development of advanced software design tools for electrical machines. The Wrexham-based company is at the forefront of motor design innovation and technology and is best known for its Motor-CAD software suite – the most complete and integrated electrical and thermal motor design software.  MDL’s Dr. Mircea Popescu created the electromagnetic and thermal design for the APM 200 motor.

The company worked with Norwich-based Equipmake Ltd, specialists in design, prototyping and production of high performance motors and power electronics. MDL used its Motor-CAD software to assist in the development of Equipmake’s ground breaking APM200 motor.

MDL’s President, Dr. Dave Staton, says, “Motor Design Limited are delighted to have worked alongside Equipmake and Ariel on such a prestigious and exciting project as the new Ariel Hipercar. Our collaboration showcases the best of UK design and engineering talent, from the software modelling through prototyping to the finished motor – the heart of the Ariel Hipercar – which is leading the future development of low carbon vehicles and the performance they are capable of delivering.”

Equipmake MD Ian Foley says, “Equipmake and MDL have collaborated on a number of high performance motor development projects, culminating in the development of the APM200. Equipmake is currently delivering prototypes to OEMs and will start production in 2019. Our close collaboration with MDL has enabled us to go from CAD design to validated prototype in record time.”
